Questions for Thought and Solutions: What is Mobility & Internet of Things (IoT)?

What is Mobility & Internet of Things (IoT)?

You’ve probably been hearing a lot about “IoT” (or the Internet of Things). But is it right for your organization?

The truth is, almost any company in business today has some use for IoT. I thought I’d share a little bit about it to help you understand this quickly growing field.

IoT Tip #1: Almost every business has an IoT use case

IoT may sound futuristic, but in reality it can be as complex or as simple as you need. Fundamentally, IoT collects data at a source point, transports that data and has a platform that produces actionable insights or even triggers automated actions.

Something as simple as a temperature sensor on a critical piece of equipment or as complex as deep real-time consumer insights are considered IoT.

There’s way too much to say about IoT use cases in one email. If you’d like to explore how IoT can help you address some of your lingering pain points or reach important business goals, I’d be happy to grab some time together.

Sometimes it can be hard to imagine how data actually impacts your business. When it comes to IoT-gathered data, one of the biggest benefits is increased efficiency.

IoT Tip #2: IoT solutions often lead to increased efficiency

Because IoT devices gather immense amounts of data, they often help organizations achieve increased efficiency. Whether it’s from a better understanding of consumer or employee use patterns, being notified that a piece of equipment is breaking before it goes down or any number of other data insights, having a better understanding of your employees, customers, infrastructure and inventory helps optimize efficiency.

So you understand how IoT solutions increase efficiency. Guess what that often leads to?

IoT Tip #3: Increased efficiency = cost savings

When you use IoT solutions to gather real, data-driven insights and improve efficiency through those insights and IoT automation, the next logical outcome is cost savings.

A few of my favorite IoT-driven cost savings stories include better staffing practices based on data insights, knowing exactly what’s causing performance degradation before it gets too bad (or brings your business to a halt all together) and being able to precisely track important equipment (from laptops to MRI machines) so nothing gets lost. Getting in front of each of these scenarios has intrinsic cost optimization and savings opportunities.

Over the past few emails I’ve shared some of the benefits of IoT solutions. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t touch on one important point: IoT solutions should be tailored to your needs, not just a random service.

IoT Tip #4: IoT solutions shouldn’t be “off the shelf”

IoT solutions collect so much data and perform so many functions that it’s important to select the right solution for your exact needs. Start by identifying your particular pain points or the desired insights and results from an IoT initiative. This will help define your needs and form the backbone of your solution.

Working with an experienced IoT enterprise provider is also highly recommended to ensure you get the most benefit from your investment.

If you’d like help thinking through your IoT needs I’m happy to walk you through the process.
